Mad Scientists Hope to Replace Our Eyes With Our Tongues
Lance Corporal Craig Lundberg went to Iraq with the British army, and after a bad experience with an RPG, returned without his sight. Lucky for Craig, some crazy scientists with a radical approach to overcoming blindness came to him with their new invention, and his powers of sight were restored. So how did they do it? Simple: they just replaced Craig’s eyes with his tongue. But don’t start imagining some sick horror movie scene where a guy has a tongue hanging from his eye-socket – cool as that would be, that’s not how this new innovation works. Instead, the tongue-eye device, called a BrainPort, works by collecting visual information via eyeglass-mounted camera, then sending the info to various areas of the user’s tongue via electrical impulse. Eventually, the BrainPort user learns to interpret the signals, and build up a visual image of their surroundings. Craig Lundberg has been testing the device for some time, and now says he can pick up objects without fumbling, and even walk in a straight line without issue. Besides the obvious benefits for the blind, BrainPort promises to open up whole new avenues of perverse enjoyment for oglers. Gives new meaning to the term “tasty dish.”
