Mattel Introducing “Mad Men” Barbies. The Joan Doll is Missing Something. Two Somethings, Actually.

There’s something so right about the idea of Mad Men getting its own line of Barbie dolls.  The characters are all impossibly beautiful to begin with, like dolls, plus who wouldn’t love to play doll dress-up with all those amazing ’60s fashions?  Um…but there’s something wrong with one of these dolls, I can see right off the bat.  The Joan doll is…how do I put this delicately?  Anatomically disappointing?  I mean, come on Mattel – if you’re going to do a Barbie doll modeled after Christina Hendricks, do a Barbie doll modeled after Christina Hendricks.  If ever there was a woman whose body warranted the kind of anatomical exaggeration normally associated with plastic representations of the human form, she would be the girl.

And another problem…why exactly does Don Draper look like Keir Dullea?  Would it had have killed Mattel to hire someone to create doll-heads that actually resemble the characters?  Taking generic Kens and Barbies and dressing them up in Mad Men outfits doesn’t make them Mad Men dolls.  Plus, that Roger doll looks waaaaaaay too sober.  This is kind of a gyp if you ask me.
