Dina Lohan Vs. Carvel
Leave it to Dina Lohan to turn something simple and innocent like buying an ice cream cake into a matter that requires police intervention.
The Great Ice Cream Incident, as it shall henceforth be known, went down Thursday morning at Carvel in East Meadow, Long Island. There are conflicting accounts of what really happened, but here’s what we know for sure: Dina Lohan, who is fairly wealthy, went in trying to get a free cake for her son on his birthday. The Carvel people, however, refused to honor the free ice cream card Dina attempted to use. Dina got indignant. The situation escalated until police assistance was required.
The version of events told by Dina Lohan to Radar Online paints her, of course, as an innocent victim.
“The shop assistant said, ‘Do you have I.D.?’” Dina recounts. “Next minute he grabbed my arm and took my card and held it hostage and wouldn’t give me the cake! This guy was crazy!”
Harrowing.
As it turns out, the card Dina attempted to use, a special Carvel “Black Card” handed out to celebrities as part of a promotion by the store last summer, was not in her name.
“I didn’t think it would be a problem,” Dina complained to Radar Online. “I couldn’t believe this guy… it’s a family card, it just didn’t have my name on it.”
Sadly, Dina and the store manager were unable to work the situation out themselves, and the authorities had to be summoned.
Dina recalled the terrifying moment: “Next minute, four cop cars showed up, there’s a police helicopter over head and this guy makes it seem to the cops that I’m trying to use a stolen credit card — and for what? Over a free ice cream?!”
Now I can see where Lindsay gets her grasp of reality from.
Naturally, the Carvel people are telling a very different story. They say the card Dina tried to use was given to her daughter Ali (who is evidently considered a celebrity), and is not a family card to be used by anyone with the last name “Lohan.” Furthermore, say the Carvel people, yesterday was not the first time Dina tried to scam free stuff by using a card that is not hers. They claim Dina and various Lohans have been going nuts getting free stuff on the card for months, and yesterday was just the day someone finally decided to clamp down.
A statement on the website Carvel Ice Cream Newsroom (not making that up) explains it all:
As part of Carvel’s 75th Anniversary celebration last year, we issued 75 Black Cards to celebrities. These cards were issued in the celebrity’s name and require the card holder to be present at the time of use. Many celebrities have enjoyed their cards at our Carvel Ice Cream shoppes and have shared their excitement with being included in the celebration.
Unfortunately, the Lohan family has been abusing the card. While the card was issued in Lindsay and Ali’s names only, their extended family has repeatedly used the card without either present. At first, we graciously honored their requests while explaining that the Black Card was not a carte blanche for unlimited Carvel Ice Cream for the extended Lohan family and friends. After more than six months of numerous and large orders for ice cream, we finally had to cut off the card and take it back.
Dina Lohan reacted badly and called the police to have her card returned. The police responded and did return the card to Dina with instructions not to use it again.
This is an unfortunate situation where certain people feel entitled to use a celebrity’s name for their own purposes. We regret that the Lohan family is upset and hope this matter is put behind us quickly.
As you can see, the Carvel version of events makes it clear that Dina was the one who called the cops. However, in Dina’s account, it seems we’re meant to believe that either they called the cops or the cops just showed up.
Given the Lohan family’s history of bending the truth, I’m going to believe the Carvel people.
