Swimmer Stephanie Rice Dumped by Jaguar Over Homophobic Tweet
Attention celebrities: Tweeting without thinking can be hazardous to your pocketbook. Just ask Olympic swimmer Stephanie Rice, who has been dumped by Jaguar after posting a homophobic remark on her Twitter account.
Rice posted the questionable tweet while exuberantly celebrating a victory by her boyfriend’s rugby team. “Suck on that faggots!” hammered Stephanie’s momentarily unsupervised fingers.
Stephanie quickly realized what she’d typed, deleted it and apologized. But not fast enough to keep Jaguar from noticing.
“We have terminated our agreement with her,” said a Jaguar representative. “It’s to do with how we want to associate our brand and unfortunately this … is not an association we want to have going forward.”
In Stephanie’s defense, she does swim for a living. All that chlorine has probably caused damage to the part of her brain that controls judgment. But, I’m sure she can score some new endorsement deals to replace the Jaguar one. There are plenty of companies out there that embrace the kind of unthinking homophobia Stephanie enjoys. The Republican party, for instance. They like gay slurs, and athletes, and chicks who are hot if you don’t look too close. Sounds perfect.
