Game of Thrones
Melisandre, known as the Red Priestess, is a follower of R’hllor and is a Shadowbinder from Asshai. She is described as a great beauty, with reddish-copper hair. She has a heart-shaped face, and is slender, graceful, and tall. Melisandre wears the red robes of her faith, and is never without her gold choker with a ruby in the center. It is said, that when she practices her magic, the ruby burns bright.
Melisandre was once a slave, until she was sold to the priests of the Red Temple, where she learned to practice her new faith. As a Shadowbinder, Melisandre can summon a shadow assassin to do her biding. In Game of Thrones, she summoned the shadow assassin to kill Renly Baratheon. Melisandre also practices blood-magic, which she employs to strengthen Stannis Baratheon’s claim to the Iron Throne.
Using her prescient abilities to foresee a version of the future, Melisandre traveled to Dragonstone, to pledge fealty to Stannis Baratheon. She believes Stannis is Azor Ahia reborn, a hero who defeated the Others more than eight thousand years prior to the events of Game of Thrones. Melisandre is not well received by everyone in Dragonstone however, because her religion is so very different from that of The Seven. However, after Stannis’ wife forsook The Seven, and turned to R’hllor, then the other people of Dragonstone began doing so as well.
