Game of Thrones
“The Lion does not concern himself with the opinions of the sheep”
Lord Tywin Lannister is day 55 in our countdown to season 4 of Game of Thrones. Tywin Lannister is the Warden of the West, Lord of Casterly Rock, and Hand of the King. Tywin spent much of his early life repairing his House’s good name, for it had became the laughing stock of the Kingdom.
Tywin’s father, Tytos, was known as an amiable man, who lacked the fortitude to enforce the laws of the Westerlands, which resulted in a lack of respect that his house deserved. When Tywin came of age, he decimated the bloodlines of two houses that were bannermen to his house, because they had shown a lack of respect and openly defied their liege Lord. The decimation was so completely brutal, that a song was written about it “The Rains of Castamere” .
Tywin became Warden of the West and Lord of Casterly Rock, when his father died of a heart attack. Soon after, Tywin came across his father’s mistress, trying on his late mother’s clothes. Tywin stripped her naked, and made her walk the streets of Lannisport, confessing to every person she passed that she was a whore; he then banished the woman from his lands.
At age 20, Tywin was summoned to King’s Landing by King Aerys II, and was appointed the Hand of the King. He served faithfully for 20 years, but when Aerys slighted House Lannister by refusing to marry his son Rhaegar to Tywin’s daughter Cersei, Tywin stepped down as Hand of the King, and returned to Casterly Rock.
During Robert Baratheon’s rebellion, King Aerys sent many ravens to Lord Tywin, begging for help from his former Hand, but Tywin ignored the Mad King’s pleas, and waited to see which side would emerge victorious. After the battle of the Trident, where Prince Rhaegar was slain by the usurper Robert Baratheon, Lord Tywin brought his army to the gates of King’s Landing and fooled Aerys into opening the gates. Once inside King’s Landing, Tywin’s army sacked the city, and began burning, pillaging, and raping.
Once Robert Baratheon was made King, Tywin married his daughter, Cersei, to the usurper. In season 3, Tywin is reinstated as Hand of the King by his grandson, Joffrey. As Hand of the King, Tywin was able to maneuver the right pieces in place, in order to secure the slaughter of Robb Stark and his army.
