Game of Thrones
Our countdown character of the day is the Mother of Dragons, Daenerys Targaryen. Daenerys was born at her family’s ancestral castle, Dragonstone during a massive storm that decimated what was left of the Taergaryen fleet. Because of the storm, and the fact that her mother died during childbirth, Daenerys is also known as ‘Stormborn’.
Daenerys was born in the last days of Robert Baratheon’s rebellion, and after her birth, the servants and remaining garrisoned soldiers in Dragonstone, plotted to sell Daenerys and her brother Viserys to the usurper. However, Ser William Darry, who was still loyal to House Targaryen, caught wind of the plotted betrayal, and spirited Daenerys and her brother across the narrow sea, to the free city of Braavos.
The two Targaryen children lived with Ser William Darry in a house with a red door until the Knight’s death. Once Ser Darry was dead, his remaining servants forced Daenerys and her brother out of the house, and off of the estate’s grounds. Daenerys regularly recalls, with some affection, the house with the red door, for that is where she always felt the safest.
The Targaryen children wandered the Free Cities until a Magister by the name of Illyrio Mopatis took them in, and began to help Viserys to garner support for his return to Westeros, to reclaim the Iron Throne.
Illyrio and Viserys made a deal with the Dothraki Warlord, Khal Drogo. The arrangement was for Daenerys to marry the Khal, and in return, Viserys would receive ten thousand Dothraki warriors to help him reclaim the Iron Throne.
During the wedding celebration, Daenerys was presented with three very important gifts. The first was a pledge of fealty from the banished Knight, Ser Jorah Mormont. The Second was a gift from Khal Drogo, a magnificent silver filly that was the finest horse Daenerys had ever seen. The third, and probably the most important, was an ornate box that held within, three petrified dragon eggs.
Daenerys quickly grew to love Drogo, and became a good wife, and competent Khaleesi. Soon after, Daenerys became pregnant, and Drogo took her and his Khalasar to Vaes Dothrak where she was presented to the Dosh Khaleen (a group of widowed Khaleesi who act as seers) where Daenerys was forced to eat a stallion’s heart, in order for the old crones to see into her future.
The Dosh Khaleen proclaimed that her unborn child would be the ‘Stallion who Mounts the World’ a long prophesied Khal that would unite all the Khalasars of the Dothraki, and conquer the world. However, after Drogo’s Khalasar left Vaes Dothrak, he sustained a wound that quickly grew to infection, and caused the great Khal to fall from his horse.
Daenerys made a deal with a witch to bring Khal Drogo back to her, but the ritual was of dark blood magic, and instead of bringing Drogo back to life, Dany’s unborn son was killed in her womb. Distraught, Dany killed the catatonic Drogo, and set his body onto a pyre, along with the witch that caused the blood magic that killed her unborn son, and the three petrified dragon eggs.
Once the pyre was set ablaze, Daenerys walked into the fire. The next morning, Dany emerged with three baby dragons that had hatched from the petrified eggs. Having seen such magic for themselves, Drogo’s former Khalasar knelt and swore fealty to Daenerys, making her the first and only female Dothraki Warlord.
In season 3, Daenerys searches for an army to fill her Khalasar, so that she may return to Westeros and reclaim her family’s throne. Dany purchases the Unsullied, then sets them free, and orders them to turn on their cruel masters. Daenerys quickly begins to understand that she must first learn to rule her people before she can sit on the Iron Throne. The last we see of Dany, the freed slaves gather around her, calling her mother, as they lift her up above the throng of her new army.
