Season 4

Jeor Mormont

The Old Bear, Lord Commander Jeor Mormont, was the 997th Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch. His son is Jorah Mormont, who is one of Daenerys Targaryen’s most trusted advisors. Jeor was head of House Mormont, and Lord of Bear Island.

During Robert Baratheon’s rebellion, Jeor Mormont came to his liege Lord’s call, when Lord Eddard Stark called his Bannermen. Shortly after the war, Jeor abdicated his seat as head of House Mormont, passing leadership of his House to his son, Jorah. He took the black of the Night’s Watch, and quickly rose to the position of the Lord Commander.

When Jon Snow joined the Night’s Watch, Lord Commander Jeor made him his steward, because he saw the strength and honor of the Starks in Jon, and wanted to groom him to become the next Lord Commander. When Jon and his direwolf Ghost, rescue Lord Mormont from the wight attack, he gave Jon his family’s ancestral sword, Longclaw.

With Lord Commander Mormont leading them, 300 brothers of the Night’s Watch rode out of Castle Black, and to the Fist of the First Men. They traveled there in order to investigate why Mance Rayder and the Wildlings were gathering in the Frost Fangs.

It is at the Fist of the First men, where the brothers of the Night’s Watch were broken by the undead army of the White Walkers. Lord Mormont lead his men in a retreat all the way back to Craster’s Keep, where he was slain by his own men during a mutiny.
