Game of Thrones
House Baratheon is the youngest of the great-noble Houses in Westeros, and was founded by Orys Baratheon, King Aegon I Targaryen’s fiercest general, and rumored bastard brother. House Baratheon’s ancestral castle is Storm’s End on Shipbreaker Bay, in the Stormlands. House Baratheon’s words are “Ours is the Fury” and their Sigil is a black stag on a background of yellow. Orys gained Storm’s End, by slaying the last Storm King, Argilac Durrendon, and he took Argilac’s daughter as his bride, then adopted House Durrendon’s sigil and words, as his own.
Because Orys Baratheon was Aegon’s best friend and bastard brother, House Baratheon held allegiance to the line of Targaryen Kings. Even Robert’s own father, Steffan Baratheon, was the Mad King Aerys Targaryen’s first cousin, and sailed across the Narrow Sea, to find a bride for Prince Rhaegar Targaryen. Lord Steffan did not make it back alive, as his ship met a storm in Shipbreaker Bay, and sank while his sons, Stannis and Robert watched.
Not long after, Robert Baratheon began his War of the Usurper, to unseat the Targaryen King and to kill Prince Rhaegar. Robert thought that Rhaegar kidnapped and raped Lyanna Stark, to whom he was betrothed. Robert succeeded in his rebellion and slew Prince Rhaegar, taking the Iron Throne, and establishing House Baratheon’s royal line. After taking the throne, Robert split House Baratheon into two cadet houses. To his brother Stannis, Robert granted Dragonstone (formerly the Targaryen ancestral seat), and to his other brother Renly, Robert granted Storm’s End.
In recent events, King Robert Baratheon has been killed in a hunting accident, and his son Joffrey, followed him as King. However, Joffrey is not Robert’s son, as he is the product of an incestal relationship between Cersei and her brother, Jaime. Because of this, both Stannis and Renly claimed their right to the Iron Throne, and decided to go to war; House Baratheon was divided. However, on the eve of a battle between the Baratheon brothers, Renly was slain by a shadow assassin, created by the Red Priestess, Melisandre. Stannis now believes he is the last remaining male heir of the Baratheon line, despite the many bastard sons of Robert.
What do you think is in store for House Baratheon? Will Stannis be able to claim the Iron Throne? Will one of Robert’s many bastards be legitimized and take over lordship of House Baratheon? Let me know your thoughts and theories in the comments below.
