House Arryn_LB

House Arryn is one of the great noble Houses of Westeros. Their sigil is a blue falcon flying across a white moon, against a blue field, and their House words are “As High as Honor”. House Arryn is descended from the Andals, and because of their marriage practice of marrying only other Andals, the Arryn line is said to have the purest line of Andal blood, out of all the great noble Houses of Westeros.

House Arryn’s ancestral home is the Eyrie, which sits in the Mountains of the Moon, specifically astride the Giant’s Lance, where it is several thousand feet above the Vale of Arryn. The Eyrie is considered impregnable, and can withstand any attack by any army. It is famous for its Moon Door, where the Lords of the Vale execute criminals convicted and sentenced to death, by “Making them fly”,  where they fall to their death, thousands of feet to the floor of the valley below.

House Arryn was established, after Ser Artys Arryn killed the Griffon King, and placed his family as the Kings of the Vale. Artys also renamed the valley to the Vale of Arryn, and fashioned the falcon crown. During Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of the Seven Kingdoms, the Arryn and Targaryen fleets fought to a stand-still during the Battle of Gulltown, and it seemed that House Arryn would repel the Targaryen invaders, but when Visenya Targaryen arrived at the Vale, astride her dragon, she found out that the young Arryn King, King Ronnel, desperately wanted to ride a dragon. Soon after, the Arryns bent the knee, and House Arryn was named Lords of the Vale and Wardens of the East.

In recent events, Lord of the Vale and Warden of the East, Jon Arryn, called his banners and supported Robert Baratheon’s rebellion. After the war, Robert named Jon Arryn his Hand of the King, where he served faithfully, until he died amidst mysterious circumstances. Jon’s wife and young child fled King’s Landing, and returned home to the Eyrie, where the Lords of the Vale rallied around her, to protect Jon Arryn’s heir, Robert.

House Arryn will have a major role to play in season 4 of Game of Thrones, and beyond. What do think their role in upcoming events will be? Let me know in the comments below.
