Game of Thrones actress joins The Hunger Games

With the premiere of HBO’s hit show Game of Thrones season 4 just hours away, some great news is coming out for one of it’s actors. Fan favorite Gwendoline Christie, who is known to most as androgynous Brienne of Tarth, has been attached to the last movie in The Hunger Games Franchise. She will join fellow Game of Thrones actress Natalie Dormer (Margaery Tyrell). Christie will be playing Commander Lyme, who is very much like her character Brienne.

Lily Rabe was the original actress cast to play Lyme but had to walk away due to prior commitments. Lily Rabe is a phenomenal actress in her own right but I don’t think it could have been recast with a better person. Christie doesn’t have the acting resume Rabe possess but she is capable of playing a powerful character. Christie is not the statuesque glamazon some movie producers would have wanted but she is what the role requires.

Many great actors are passed over for roles because they don’t have classic movie star looks like Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth. It’s nice to see someone who could look like a person we know or at the very least someone we would like to watch for 3 hours and not hate ourselves. My only hope is she’s not pigeonholed into a type of role just because producers lack imagination. We haven’t even scratched the surface of what Christie can do on screen.

Game of Thrones fans are wondering what this means for their beloved character Brienne. I am sure she would not have taken the Hunger Games job if it interfered with the show that was her first big break. Its only for the last movie so fans don’t start a letter writing campaign or go on Reddit pontificating what the directors could do if she left the show. I do hope this means we will see more of Christie and actors like her on TV and movie screens.
