Game of Thrones Season 4 Episode 1 Recap

Well, the Game of Thrones season 4 premiere came and went, and just like Christmas morning, it was over too fast. I’ve already watched it three times, because it was just that awesome, and let me tell you, we’ve got lots to talk about. Right off the bat, the recap before the episode, took a different turn than in previous seasons. Showing the Stark ancestral Valyrian Steel sword -  Ice, was a tasty bit of foreshadowing for tonight’s episode, which was titled “Two Swords”.

Lord Tywin had Ned Stark’s sword, melted down into two swords. One for his son Jaime and one as a wedding present for his grandson, Joffrey. There was some absolute beautiful imagery in the opening scene, as Ice was melted down, with ‘The Rains of Castamere’ mournfully playing in the background. It was as if Lord Tywin had finally rid himself of House Stark, even going so far as throwing the wolf hide sheath, that held Ned’s sword, into the fire. Again, some of the best symbolism I’ve seen in the entire series. A very powerful scene, indeed. Side note: You just know that room smelled like Bigfoot’s dick, after throwing that wolf-pelt sheath into the fire.

Although this is Game of Thrones, and inevitably a dark and gritty show to be sure, there were more than a few moments filled with unexpected levity. Scenes like, Tyrion awaiting the emissaries from Dorne, and of course Bronn did his part, with his usual wit and humor. I was very happy that Bronn and Prince Oberyn had a moment at Tyrion’s expense.  I am most definitely looking forward to more interactions between these two dynamic characters.

Speaking of Prince Oberyn, I was more than excited to see him on screen, and he looks almost exactly how I imagined him, when I read the books. I gotta admit, I was a bit nervous for his casting, but Pedro Pascal is doing an amazing job. I especially liked the badassery he displayed right from the jump, when he stabbed the Lannister guard.

As if the introduction of the Red Viper of Dorne wasn’t enough, we got to see some pretty large dragons, and just how connected they still are to Daenerys. I loved that we got to see Dany treating Drogon like a pet, with him laying his head in her lap, almost like a cat. Although, I bet she wont try to get between Drogon and his BBQ sheep, ever again. If you had any worries about how Dany would be able to control her dragons, I hope they are all dissipated now. She is the Mother of Dragons, and Drogon snuggling with her (do dragons snuggle?) proved it.

Jaime got a new hand, and found out that his sister has become a drunken curmudgeon in his absence. This season will be huge for Jaime, as he will grow as a character right before our very eyes. I loved the back and forth he and Lord Tywin had. You can tell that the Lord of Casterly Rock, Warden of the West, and Hand of the King, is not used to being told no, but Jaime had no trouble at all. If you look closely at that scene, you can tell that Lord Tywin, even though he is annoyed by his son, still respects him. Also, notice Jaime’s facial expression as he is walking off…priceless!

Jon Snow went before the Brother’s of the Night’s Watch to answer for his supposed crimes and oath breaking, but thanks to Maester Aemon, he kept his head, which he will need in upcoming episodes. Also, the Magnar of Thenn showed up, and he brought his own bagged lunch. Although, I don’t think you would want to trade lunches with him, unless you are particularly fond of Crow.

Tonight, the metamorphosis of Arya Stark began. She is no longer the scared little girl, who watched her brother’s direwolf get killed by Walder Frey’s men, no she is much different. I think we are about to see Arya begin to turn off her humanity, as it were. You can clearly  see, as she kills Polliver, that she has no problem killing a person, in her pursuit of vengeance against those who have harmed/killed her family and friends. Stick ‘em with the pointy end, Arya!
