FOX Upfronts New TV Shows for 2014-2015

This week marks network TV’s preseason, called Upfronts. This is the first opportunity for networks to sell their show to critics and get viewers excited about the new shows coming in the fall. This normally consist of a panel with the actors in the show and the release of a trailer. FOX Broadcasting kicked off the week with the announcement of 9 new shows. Some shows looked very promising but others left me confused. I have selected the top 5 shows you should not miss and the shows that are DOA.

I have to admit the nerd girl in me was excited about the announcement of Gotham. Gotham will center around the origins of some of the greatest DC Comics Super-Villains and vigilantes. This brings Ben McKenzie (“The O.C.”), Donal Logue (“Sons of Anarchy”) and Jada Pinkett Smith (“The Matrix” films) back to our TV and I could not be happier. Shows like Arrow (WB) and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D (ABC) have been very successful in bringing comic book characters to the small screen. However, If you are a fan of comic book TV shows staying true to the original comic book story line, then this show may not be for you. This is on my must watch list.

This show is based on the novel by M. Night Shyamalan, and is being sold as a “intense, mind-bending 10-episode thriller.” If you like the TV show Twin Peeks, I think you have found your new show. What I do like, is the cast of actors they have assembled.  Matt Dillon (“Crash”) is Secret Service agent, Melissa Leo (“The Fighter”), Terrence Howard (“Crash,” “Hustle & Flow”), and Juliette Lewis (“Cape Fear”) are all great actors. This is not the kind of show I would be interested in watching but great trailer and casting.

Backstrom is the story of a destructive, offensive, and crabby but smart brilliant detective (Rainn Wilson), who runs the Portland Police Bureau’s Special Crimes Unit (S.C.U.). Sounds a lot like House M.D version 2.0. House was a huge success for FOX and since its finale, it has been searching for a replacement. Fox has clearly found it in Backstrom.

Empire is being advertised as a powerful new family drama. The show is about the head of a music empire whose three sons and ex-wife all vying for control. Terrence Howard, is the star of the show but  Taraji P. Henson steals the screen. The chemistry between Howard and Henson is electric. I feel like the show would have been better served on HBO or Cinemax. Fox needs to be very careful where they schedule this show or no one will watch it.

This is series a remake of the BBC whodunit called “Broadchurch.”  David Tennant is not a household name in America but hopes it could change with Gracepoint. Fox is fully invested in making Gracepoint a success by bringing in award winning dramatic actors Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad),  Nick Nolte (Warrior) and Michael Pena (Crash). Please be aware it will touch on some very uncomfortable topics and will rarely have, if any, moments of levity. If you don’t want to wait for Gracepoint to air on FOX please watch Broadchurch. You can thank me later.

UGH! I am going to say what you are all thinking. Everyone watched this show in the 90’s when it was called Seinfeld. I am disappointed in John Mulaney because he is better than this. This show won’t get to its 4th episode.

This is the story of a man who wakes up in 2022 only to find out he is the last person on……. Sorry, I fell asleep. If all we get is Will Forte, alone, for 30 minutes an episode I could see this not ending well for this show.

Tell me what you think of the shows in the comments.
