In Game of Thrones season 4 – episode 8, ‘The Mountain and The Viper’, fans of the books were able to finally see the epic showdown between Gregor Clegane and Oberyn Martell. While that fight scene absolutely took center stage, another moment happened during the show that had fans of both the books and the HBO series, delightedly giggling with glee!

As The Hound (Sandor Clegane) and Arya Stark approach the entrance to the Eyrie, in order to ransom Arya to her aunt Lysa, the pair was stopped by a guard who challenged their approach by asking who they were. When The Hound revealed that his “traveling companion” was none other than Lord Eddard Stark’s lost daughter, Arya, the guard hung his head and offered his condolences for her aunt’s death, not three days prior.

What happened next was a moment of pure levity in an otherwise dark episode, as Arya bursts out in laughter, that went on until the scene was over. In a recent interview with EW.com the actress who so expertly portrays Arya Stark, Maisie Williams, explained the laugh, and what it actually meant.

“When I was doing it, it was more a reaction to The Hound. This whole time he’s been giving her such a hard time. He’s so in control, and he’s this tough guy, saying he’s going to take me to my aunt in the Vale and ‘I’m going to get my money and I don’t care about you, I just want my money.’ And all of a sudden this happens, and Arya completely loves it. And through laughter, she’s saying, ‘Now what are you going to do?’ It’s fascinating to see this little girl giggling in the sunlight.”

Maisie went on to say:

“That’s the happiest on set I’ve ever had to be, and it was the most difficult scene I’ve ever had to film…literally laughing on command is the most difficult thing. It was just so weird to be able to laugh on set and not be told off for it. I’m glad people like it.”

The question that fans have now is, where will The Hound and Arya go next? Williams teased an answer to that, as well.

“What are they going to do? They’ve got too much of a relationship now for him to just leave her.”

Game of Thrones enters its last two episodes of season 4, this Sunday night at 8pm CST.

IMG_1593I absolutely adore Maisie Williams. She has taken a dark, brooding character from the books, and given her a much more fun persona. As my wife and I watched ‘The Mountain and the Viper’ we paused Arya’s laughing scene, because we were laughing so hard, that we didn’t want to miss any dialogue.

This season of Game of Thrones has been filled with so many excellent acting performances, that Maisie Williams ends up taking a back seat to Peter Dinklage (Tyrion) and Pedro Pascal (Oberyn Martell). Still though, if a phenomenal actress  like Maisie Williams is easily the third best actor/actress on the show, then you know HBO has got pure television gold.
