It doesn’t seem that long ago. The year was 2006 and Brandon Routh had been tagged as the chosen one, the one who would don the tights and cape of Superman, the one who would usher in an all new era of The Big Blue Boyscout. It was to be a glorious return, as it had been over 20 years since the legendary and iconic Christopher Reeve graced the silver screen in 1983. (Superman IV: The Quest for Peace doesn’t count, nor should its name ever be uttered, from hence forth and forevermore).
DC comics and Superman fans everywhere, were cautiously excited with anticipation over the return of the Man of Steel to the big screen. Welp…that didn’t go so well, the movie bombed and fanboys/girls everywhere lamented, with much weeping and gnashing of teeth, the loss of the flagship of DC comics, once again.
Well, Brandon Routh is back in the DC universe once again, and this time it’s on the small screen. Routh was announced by the CW to be joining the cast of their breakout hit, ‘Arrow’. Routh will be portraying Ray Palmer, who’s alter-ego is none other than The Atom.
The Atom possesses the power to alter his size all the way down to the subatomic level, all the while, retaining his strength. He does this by using the remnants of a white-dwarf star made into a belt buckle worn with his costume.
Could this be DC’s answer to Marvel moving forward with Antman? The timing of this announcement sure seems to allude to that fact. Either way, this is exciting news for fans of ‘Arrow’. Brandon Routh is a talented actor, and I in no way blamed him for the failure of Superman Returns. In fact, if you watched NBC’s ‘Chuck’, Routh had an excellent run as a villain on that show…the guy can act.
So what do you think? Can Brandon Routh handle the role of The Atom? I think he can. Let me know your thoughts, in the comments below.
